Big Idea:
Students learn that STEM coursework is not necessarily restricted to engineering, but a general concept applicable to all walks of life.
Key Concepts:

Effective STEM curriculum and instruction strengthens  student understanding by providing design challenges related to real world issues. By incorporating various components that inspire entrepreneurship through; digital citizenship; coding and programing; digital story telling; product design; computer aided drawing; and engineering technology, students explore and address real social, economic and environmental problems and seek solutions.

Facing THE Future

www.facingthefuture.org
"Some concepts just naturally engage students' curiosity. Consumption - how we "buy, use, and toss" - is one of those engaging concepts. Because consumption is current, relevant, and real, it is an ideal topic to help our students improve their lives and the lives of others. The intent of this unit is not to discourage students from buying "stuff" but rather to equip them with knowledge and skills to help them be informed and empowered consumers."  - Facing THE Future
STORY OF STUFF MOVIE
Big Idea: Students will record and analyze trash they produce in 24 hours in order to define "luxury" and "necessity" for themselves.
Key Concepts:
material consumption - the purchase and use of resources and products
waste disposal - the act of getting rid of unwanted materials
culture - the behavior, art, beliefs, and traditions of a group of people.
Vocabulary:
                                 luxury  |  necessity  |  archaeology  |  midden

Click here to review rubric for this lesson :)
Dear Students,

Welcome back to day 3 of STEAM Lab. Today you will log on to Tinkercad.com and explore the basics of creating digital designs that are ready to be 3D printed into super-cool physical objects. Please review the rubric for this lesson.
Learning Objectives:

1.  Getting started - explore navigation and menus
2.  Testing - use your new navigation skills by                creating a basic robot desgin.
3.  Communicating - find a partner to reteach                 techniques to move, rotate and scale an object.
4.   Create - use your imagination to design a model       of your choice.

ENERGY AND MATTER
NGSS CrossCutting Concepts
Grades 3-5

Can energy can be transferred in various ways and between different objects?

Science and Engineering Practices
Students who demonstrate understanding can:
  • Make observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place to place by sound, light, heat and electric currents.
  • Apply scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another.

Essential Question:
How can a problem be stated so that it can be solved?

Working together and expressing ideas in words, sketches, and models are helpful in coming up with different solutions to problems.

QUICK RUBRIC
Essential Question:
How does the use of media influence the brain's perception of which information should be stored in long term or short term memory?
Students who demonstrate creativity and innovation will apply existing knowledge to generate an e-portfolio that showcases new ideas, products and processes of lessons explored in class this year. Choices of the e-portfolio will include Animoto, PhotoDex and Evernote.

  1. Each student will select the digital platform of their choice to communicate information and ideas covered in class during 1st and 2nd semester.
  2. As a whole class students will design and create a rubric that will determine what should be included in each portfolio and the criteria the e-portfolio will be graded upon.
  3. Please refer to your teacher's list of required items required for the e-portfolio and the date each element of the e-portfolio is due.
  4. Mrs. Hibbets and Mrs. Abbey will review your work in progress and provide your final grade.

Electric Circuits

Grades 3-8
What Impact Does Electricity Have on Our World?

Creativity and Innovation
Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology.

Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues.
Essential Question:
How does an electric circuit work?

Students who demonstrate understanding can:
Model the flow of electrons in a circuit, build an actual electric circuit, draw diagrams of electric circuits and explain how to tell when the path of an electric circuit is complete.
  1. Watch the video and record examples used to explain the following vocabulary words: electron, battery, charging, discharging, and electrical current.
  2. In pairs students will play The Bloblz Guide to ELECTRIC CIRCUITS. Be prepared to discuss your understanding of electric circuits with the whole class.
  3. In small groups students will create their own buzz wire game. The difficulty level of the game is decided during construction by choosing the diameter of wand loop, and by choosing the number of curves and corners in the wire.
